This book is incredibly popular and was well received, but the characters felt remarkably flat. I recognize the necessity for stories like this in literature, especially ones that highlight often unheard voices, but There There attempts to cover so much ground and so many characters that there is no opportunity for the reader to actively engage with either the characters or their stories. It’s still worth a read for its exploration of dark parts of the United States’ history, but I was disappointed by how shallow the story felt.
