Bad Marie
by Marcy Dermansky
I stumbled upon a website called onegrandbooks.com where you can buy the top ten books recommended by authors, celebrities, and other public figures. I read most of the lists, fascinated by what each person recommended. Of course I read Roxane Gay’s list, I respect her opinions on books. She recommended “Bad Marie.” I was surprised to see this book on Alice Water’s list also, chef of the legendary Chez Panisse. I found this intersection between people so interesting I had to get the book.
This is a crazy fast read, not highly complicated, and rapidly paced. Upon leaving prison after a six year stint, Ellen hires her friend Marie to be the nanny to her daughter, Caitlin. When Marie and Caitlin take a bath together and Marie falls asleep in the tub after drinking too much, Ellen gives Marie one week to pack her things and leave. This event sets forth a horrifying adventure around the world. The author said she wrote this as a French film, and I really see French New Wave influences on the story. As a reader, I didn’t hate Marie, and didn’t really like Marie, and I sympathized with her a little, but couldn’t place myself in her shoes. Almost all of the characters in this book are “bad” but the book was delightful to read in many ways. I found many passages humorous and the relationship between Caitlin and Marie is almost precious. I want to describe this book as “Thelma and Louise” but one woman is thirty years old and the other is two, but that makes no sense. Don’t take my word for this book. Read it because Roxane Gay and Alice Waters both liked it, and let me know if you read it because I really want to know what you think. • Paperback • Fiction - Literary • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • Recommended on onegrandbooks.com▪️
