The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

' “She’s defending her sister,” she said. “And there’s nothing wrong with that.”
And there wasn’t. And there isn’t. And I’ll keep doing it.
I’ll keep doing it even though she’s not here to defend.
Because there are others like him still. Tonight they used words they know, words that don’t bother people anymore. They said bitch. They told another girl they would put their dicks in her mouth. No one protested because this is our language now. But then I used my words, strung in phrases that cut deep, and people paid attention; people gasped. People didn’t know what to think.
My language is shocking. '

okay so, now that it's 1am but i am not having a breakdown, I feel more capable to try and put into words what i feel about this book.
it is brutal. that's the first word that comes to my mind, it uses poetry in the most painful way and it makes you feel everything these set of characters is feeling which isn't always pretty but it's certainly always very intense.
this book doesn't take a break, it starts with a main plot point and everything just keeps happening and happening in a way that is both subtle enough to make u go "oh right, that happened" but also that keeps u on the edge of your sit, and i shit you not, throughout the entirety of it.
i feel like I have to leave a trigger warning for sexual abuse, animal violence and just brutality in general but if you are able, from a mental health point of view, to read this book i strongly recommend you do so.
it's a beautiful and painful story about a girl who lost her big sister and felt like justice held no meaning, a girl who is more than her father's daughter and a boy more layered than you'd expect a "hot jock" to be.
