In Cold Blood

Superbly written; reads like a very long New Yorker article. But also clinical like one, detached. However, having just finished Mark Twain, I felt like the directions explored were very progressive for the time (yes, I understand they were not contemporaries, but one enforced the norm and one lived outside it).
