Listened on audio - I was hesitant to even rate this book because my opinion may be skewed. 10/10 do not recommend getting a brain injury in the middle of reading a heavy one like this! Clint is a wonderfully engaging storyteller, but it felt like it dragged & I’m rarely in the mood for a dense history lesson these days. While this is mostly a personal problem and not reflective of the writing or content, I felt that a few parts were redundant and unnecessarily wordy, which lost my attention at times and took away from some of the most impactful stories and pieces of information. I wish it was a tad more concise. I didn’t realize until a friend told me, close to the end of my reading, that Clint Smith is a poet which makes perfect sense (and might explain why some of the prose maybe just didn’t work for me especially while reading a non-fiction). All that being said, the epilogue was by far my favorite part because Clint beautifully tells the stories of his grandparents and wraps up his intention behind the work and it’s impact. (He should write a full memoir, I would read it in a heartbeat.) This should definitely be assigned reading for history classes moving forward.
