Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone
3.0
A novel about sisterhood, childhood trauma, and revenge.
The pacing starts out a bit slow, but all of the exposition about Mirrorland and the twins' childhood is pretty essential for the twists and turns that follow. It's haunting and brilliant the way Johnstone shows how childhood memories can transform into something much more monstrous when we realize how much of the truth we actually repressed in order to cope.
There was one twist that I spotted a mile away, but just as I started to feel proud about getting ahead of the plot, there were, like, three more insane twists at the end that completely blew me away. So good, in fact, that I awarded this book an entire fourth star just for the finale. I am so glad I stuck around for the ride. Bravo!
