The Story of a New Name by Elena Ferrante
4.0

Ferrante’s second volume didn’t land as cleanly with me as My Brilliant Friend did. As befits the passing of time, this is a much more mature story, but still carrying on with the intertwined lives of Elena and Lila as they pass in and out of each other’s orbits, and still told solely from Elena’s perspective. Yet now there is even more emotional weight, pain and trauma, albeit balanced with love, lust, and longing for something more. I particularly enjoyed the reversal of Elena and Lila stories over the course of the volume, and the jarring ending is enough to entice me back for the next volume.
