The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

3.75

One of my favorite inner monologues i’ve read in a long time. Eleanore’s narration captured the strange and slightly pitiful mood of ‘a lonely/socially inept person getting excited and worked up by even the most minimal attention and interactions’ that I related to in an uncomfortable but very genuine way.
Some of the other characters like the Dudleys and the Montagues were underwritten, and I never knew what Theo or Luke wanted from the house, but luckily Eleanore’s writing really was strong enough to carry everything else.
Parents are scary.
