The Midnight Library

I love Matt Haig’s non fiction about dealing with anxiety but this didn’t feel as nuanced. It had the same vibe as The Alchemist where if you don’t actually struggle with the topics in the book you may find it profound, but as someone who does deal with depression it just felt way too much like I was supposed to be learning a message or having some toxic positivity boost of encouragement. As someone who’s depression has been that much more intense since the passing of my cat, I was kind of bothered by the light coverage of sadness or reaction by the main character regarding her cats violent death (despite it simultaneously being used as a “breaking point”). When I realized the next chapter would be about her regrets as a pet owner I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue. I hope others can enjoy it, it’s just not for me.
Minor: Animal death
