High and Tight by Vanessa North
3.0
leaps of faith.
i found this novella difficult to read for personal reasons, but can't say i regret giving it a go.
it was undermined by its length. with more room for these characters to develop, i think they wouldn't have suffered the slight superficiality of a piece of fiction that has to sketch the broad strokes of an intensely personal problem with as many potential resolutions as upsetting wrinkles.
regardless, i am blown away by the author's humanity—and her devastating talent for connecting me to her characters. unlike her skills as a writer—which have clearly progressed by leaps and bounds, here—her skills as person, as a human being who sees, have always been at the top of the heap.
imperfect, but recommended.
