Jade City by Fonda Lee

5.0

5/5 Jade City is one of very few books that have gripped me in a way that I can’t stop thinking about them even when I’m not busy reading them. I stayed up until 03:00 to finish a book, and I don’t regret a second of it.

While I enjoy a good fantasy book as much as the next guy, I’m not particularly fond of fantasy books where the magic system is overdone or too magicky, if that makes sense. I was delighted to find that in this book the magic system is realistic and simple, which allows it to play a significant role in book

I don’t know what it was about the writing of this book’s characters, but I felt like I was part of the clan, experiencing every moment, every blow from a rival Green Bone, every victory, and sadly, every death (especially Lan’s).

I’ve always liked political and militaristic themes in books, and this books feels like the perfect example of that.

Overall, I loved the book and could find no fault in it.
