I read this because I have a Victorianist friend who loves it. I found this story to be less novel than I had hoped it to be—the inclusion of references to Victorian books is creative, but otherwise it’s a fairly standard spy plot. With the one exception of Captain Nemo, it also reproduces instead of commenting on a lot of Victorian racism and sexism—I’m in fact not sure of what if anything the story critiques (maybe just because I’m not a Victorianist). My impression is that the references to other novels is the entire appeal of this story. I’m going to read the next volume to see if anything changes, though.
