Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This is 3.5 stars for me.

It was a slow build in the beginning. The first 40% was spent establishing Montserrat and Tristán as characters and their relationship with each other, but I didn't mind, because I enjoyed the reverence for classic Mexican cinema and horror films, and because both of the main characters were well-written. Montserrat, specifically, feels like someone that I would be friends with. When the story finally does pick up, it keeps the pace consistently through to the ending. I would have preferred that there was more time spent on the lore of the magical world that the characters inhabited, but I don't think the book suffered from not exploring it further.
