After reading like four manga classics, I feel like this was my least favourite one, which was a bit of a let down really, since I adore the original Emma.
It was a combination of art and story adaptation that made me feel disappointed. I was not the biggest fan of manga style of design of characters in this version, and there were some changes in the story where I felt unnecessary.
The fact that this version took out Harriet's fight with Emma at the end when she realized Emma was in love with Mr. Knightley, and her whole backstory about her actual father was also removed, the changes erased some of the much needed tension between Harriet and Emma, where she finally understood that she needed to be in charge of her own life and made her own decisions, sadly losing some of the great maturing moments of both Harriet and Emma. Also they took out Mr. Martin's kind words to Harriet when they were in the shop and he told her to take the high ground since it was raining and the road was flooded, she broke his heart yet he continued to worried about her well-being, that was so sweet but they cut it TT. And I was so sad about in this version Emma did not go and convince Mr.Martin about proposing to Harriet again, she basically did nothing to right her own wrong, which was yet another miss opportunity for some character growth.
It felt rushed and some of the emotional beats were denied time for it to actually sit and registered with the reader, like the scene where Mr.Knightley scolded Emma for hurting Miss Bates at Box Hill, which was such missed opportunity.
