A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
5.0

Grief overwhelms you at first, then it gradually wears down until it becomes easier to carry around. It never really leaves, but you learn to patiently bear its weight.

It's been ten years since my mom passed away, and this book brought back the pain. It's an excellently written book, able to communicate the grief of losing one's parent at a young age. It doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable emotions: the worry, the frustration, the isolation, the anger, the wish to hold on for a little bit longer, the wish for suffering to end, the regrets, the wish somebody or something would make everything better again. The book won't lift the burden of grieving, but it offers a brief respite. Highly recommended for all ages.
