I had to read this novel for a class on gender and literature. Hardy makes a lot of critical statements about societal views of marriage and ultimately argues that people would be better off without it. Interesting novel, especially if you like Hardy or are intrigued by societal views of marriage.
(Note: It's not nearly as good as Tess!)
