Here in Avalon by Tara Isabella Burton

4.0

Here in Avalon is a magical fairytale-like exploration of the modern world and how important it is to follow your own path and find your own truth.

I found the sister story authentically compelling with its ups and downs. Rose loves Cecilia, but Celia’s life choices have frustrated her and made her frustrated. Celia is feeling isolated and misunderstood, and then she gets a mysterious postcard. When she responds to the postcard, both sisters take a journey that will change them forever.

I loved the juxtaposition of “Avalon” to the rest of the world. It brings out the flaws perfectly. The magical realism of it and the ending - I can’t say enough about how powerful they are. They leave no mistake as to the message of the story. I also found the position of the ex-not-officially-the-ex very thought-provoking. His role is so complex and compelling.

Unconditional love is one of those things that we all want but is so hard to find or even recognize when it’s staring us in the face. This theme plays out as the sisters find their paths together and separately, and it kept me captivated to see how it would end. This story is entirely bewitching and quickly brought me into its world.
