How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley
5.0
On her 70th birthday Daphne decides that 15 years of hiding away in her apartment is enough and she needs some friends. After seeing a sign for an over 70s group (and buying a brand new iPhone) she is off to the community centre! There she meets Lydia, 53, who is returning to the workforce after being a stay at home mum, Art, 75, a one-time bit-part actor with a shoplifting addiction; Art’s best friend, William, a retired paparazzo; Ziggy, a 17-year-old single dad of his 8-month-old daughter, Kylie, Ruby - AKA Yarnsy, an underground yarn bomber, widow Anna whose husbands all died in crazy accidents and a dog named Maggie Thatcher. When the community centre faces closure this group of unlikely friends need to work together to save their centre and their community.
I love Clare Pooley's style of writing, it is so fun and unexpected. The characters always feel very real and a common theme is the importanceof human connection. A clear focus on this book is how people become invisible as they age and how they are stereotyped by people. I really loved this book and I loved the little Easter egg with Iona.
