Heart of the Thief

Compelling story that isn’t complete
I like the characters of this book. The group dynamics work and I’d love to see the two main characters, Izzy and Axel, get together. The writer needs a copy editor stat though. And the author also makes the mistake, in my mind at least, of mistaking a story for a series. Heart of the Thief and it’s upcoming sequel should really be one book. The characters in Heart are only just starting to develop, and the plot essentially is just beginning, when the book abruptly ends in the middle of a scene. It doesn’t end on a cliff hanger as much as it just ends.
And as long as I’m complaining, without giving any of the plot away, the story relays on a healthy dose of Deus ex machina. Really if the plot doesn’t lead your characters where you want them to be, don’t magically put a way out in the story that shouldn’t be there. Argh! I really did enjoy Izzy and the overall concept of a Wardbreaker, but the flaws are challenging to get past. In fairness I will probably read the sequel because I’d like to know where the plot goes.
