This is a book which tries to describe Native American culture in a way that defies stereotypes. At times I found it preachy, and at other times I doubted its veracity. The journey was not entirely credible, especially the contrived ending.
However, I do think that it is a genuine attempt to defy American stereotypes, whether they be good or bad, and I found it a fascinating description of the Sioux cultural norms. I also loved the way he writes about the beauty of the landscape, which is almost poetic.
The descriptions of the awful genocidal massacres that took place were truly horrific, as were the stories of the awful treatment of the natives, both in the early days, and in the modern age.
Read this and cry for the Native Peoples of the world who have suffered this appalling colonial treatment, which still has consequences for their lives in the twenty first century.
