Swann's Way by Marcel Proust

5.0

To my dismay, this was fantastic, which means I need to read the other 3,770 pages.

Proust was cunning, observant, and always concerned with beauty and art, from other people's fashion choices to classical music. He paints an incredibly detailed picture of the society that surrounded him, analysing people's intentions from within and seen from the outside. I don't think he was always entirely correct in his assumptions about other people's motivations, but that doesn't detract from his prose. I didn't even particularly care about the people in this book, and yet, Proust managed to craft incredibly compelling storytelling.

If you've read and enjoyed Oscar Wilde but are still hesitating about Proust, you are very likely to love these books.
