This is a spin off of the author's Ribbon Ridge series. While this book can stand alone, I found that it was enriched by having read the entire Ribbon Ridge series that preceded it, especially [b:You're Still the One|25900554|You're Still the One (Ribbon Ridge #6)|Darcy Burke|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1454283777s/25900554.jpg|45784354].
This story itself has me rather conflicted. On one hand, it was a quick and somewhat entertaining read, but on the other hand, it had me wanting to strangle the two main characters! They kept holding back their pasts, and it left them unable to really get a relationship going, especially since they worked together and were reluctant to do anything that jeopardized that dynamic. Yet, they both wanted to act on their attraction to one another and the starts and sudden stops on that front got quite annoying!
Everything came to a head in the last 30% of the book, and the resolution felt rather rushed. There was a lot of meddling going on and the main characters really didn't communicate well with each other. It made me feel as though the main focus of their relationship was the sexual aspect, even though they hadn't had one for much of the book. I also felt that the author missed an opportunity when it came to Brooke. Her previous Ribbon Ridge books were very emotional and enlightening reads for me, and yet when it came to Brooke and her situation, I felt very detached from it all. I felt she could have delved into greater depth about possible solutions to the situation and discussed more in depth about what Brooke had previously done to resolve it. It would have been somewhat educational as to what other women in that situation might go through, and instead it felt like the author hadn't wanted to do much research for this story.
I did enjoy the historical turn that this book took, and how we got to see more of the community/town, rather than just focusing on the Archer businesses and aspect of things. It made what I already knew really come alive. All things considered, I'd probably continue with the new series, but I'd hesitate on purchasing this book or subsequent ones.
