Watchmen by Alan Moore

I find graphic novels as a form pretty hard to get my head around - there's no narration, and instead narration relies solely on static images.

That said, I found this a truly fascinating book. There were still parts I had to read summaries to understand what was going on (totally missed the fact that Adrian was genetically engineering an alien squid, which is... quite a pivotal point) and I couldn't really match up what the Black Freighter comics had to do with the over-arcing story.

But despite all of that, I found this a really beautiful, cohesive story. I loved what it had to say about the concept of heroism, sacrifice, justice. I loved the storytelling style, where each issue focused on a slightly deeper contextual understanding of a different character. How there wasn't so much one overall plot, as overall themes and arcs explored.
