Northanger Abbey
by Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey, like all Austen's works is a delight to read from start to finish. Our dear heroine, Catherine, is a pleasant vessel through which the reader gets to explore the wonders of Bath and, of course, Northanger Abbey. Austen's witty narration only serves to accentuate the peculiar-ordinariness of our heroine. Unlike most heroines, she isn't particularly clever or artistic or talented in any area, she enjoys reading novels and never wishes to displease her friends and family. However, she is a shrewd judge of character, which is, perhaps, her most admirable trait.
Also, the character of Tilney is an interesting one. He is both intelligent and arrogant, as most of Austen's male characters tend to be. But I can't help but secretly adore every page he features in. He is also far more feminine in sensibilities and company than the typical Austen hero, which is refreshing, to say the least. He's the kind of person you could sit down with and have a chat over tea without ever tiring.
All the characters are stupid and hilarious in their own little ways, which simply adds to the charm of the novel. It should come as no surprise then that Emma is my favourite among Austen's oeuvre.
