Voyage of the Basilisk by Marie Brennan
5.0
My adoration for the Memoirs of Lady Trent has been entirely restored. While the previous book was good, this was brilliant. I think the change to a sea faring voyage really worked in the books favour because the unexpected, choppy nature of the story makes more sense and flows better.
I found the Keongan to be fascinating and I'm really enjoying the exploration of fantasy native cultures. The Keongan are accepting of a sort of transgender/nonbinary people but insist that they marry and that they have to marry the opposite of their preferred gender, because otherwise it's bad. I just found this sort of reality bemusing.
The ending seems kind of sudden but also makes sense in world. I'd have loved this voyage to be two books long though. Still a fantastic read.
