mlkai 's review for:
The Angel's Game
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
about 3.5/5 stars
i love this barcelona. i love that we got to see sempere & sons again. i love the mystery.
however, from a lot of people's reviews, i knew this book wasn't going to live up to the shadow of the wind. i feel like that's the main reason it took me so much longer than i wanted to getting into it.
also i kind of had a problem with martin. in shadow, daniel was a teenager/young adult so his naivety was understandable. but martin is thirty years old during the main portion of the mystery and i /hated/ that i figured a lot of stuff out before him. maybe i was just used to the writing style & expected what ruiz zafon was going to give us but, man, it angered me.
another thing that made this book more "meh" for me was that i couldn't stand cristina. i understood her thought process behind her decisions, but the entire time i was like "why??" i couldn't understand their love for each other (but that's mostly because i didn't really care for either character).
despite my annoyances, i did enjoy reading this. i flew through it. my experience is always more important that story quality for me which makes it closer to four stars than three. that being said, i'm excited to get my hands on the third novel and get back to the characters that i enjoy!
