The Thorn Birds
by Colleen McCullough
Book 25 of the PopSugar Reading Challenge: A Book Set in an Abbey, Cloister, Monastery, Vicarage, or Convent
This was such a fun read. Colleen McCullough is a strong writer and she did an excellent job creating a realistic portrait of a family, the Clearys. Set mostly in Australia but also in parts of Europe, this saga follows the Cleary family over the span of 60 years as they experience feast, famine, love, and heartbreak. I found myself getting so invested in their stories, mostly Meggie's. This book was part entertainment but also part history and I learned a lot about Australia during the early and mid 20th century. My only complaint about this book is that it wasn't quite as steamy and scandalous as I had been prepared for, although I'm sure it may have seemed that way when it was published in the late 70s! I thoroughly enjoyed The Thorn Birds and now I can't wait to watch the miniseries.
