Giovanni's room by James Baldwin, James Baldwin

An exquisitely constructed short novel that is very moving in its portrayal of a young American man in France who struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and what that means for his emotional connections with others. Remarkably frank for the time. Shades of Hemingway for me at times, with all that's left untold bubbling under the surface.
