The Dating Plan by Sara Desai

5.0

The Dating Plan is just what it sounds like: a plan to fake date so that two friends, well one has hated the other for the past 10 years, can benefit by a fake marriage that will solve problems in their own lives. Enter Daisy Patel and Liam Murphy: the nerdy woman who loves spreadsheets and is desperately trying to avoid her Aunties from setting her up and the classic hot bad boy who is desperate to keep the true family business. The fake dates start out according to plan but soon become not so fake. Will they end up falling for each other?

Desai's novel is not the traditional rom-com; its center stars come from Indian and Irish families that are a welcome respite from the traditional white families and characters. Daisy is a likable nerd and computer scientist whereas Liam portrays the bad boy with soft heart and emotional baggage from his family.

My one knock on this novel is that the author, editors, or any proof readers all missed that there is no "halftime" at a hockey game that is equivalent to a halftime at say a basketball game. (Side bar: While there technically IS a halftime, it occurs at precisely 10:00 minutes into the 2nd period and is only halftime in the sense that half of the allotted game time has passed.) The break between period 1 and 2 then 2 and 3 are called intermissions. But I digress...

However, I sincerely hope that Desai's upcoming book, slated for release in November 2021, is a BOTM pick later this year! Their previous book is already in my shopping cart!
