Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey
by Özge Samanci
Ozge Samanci's graphic memoir explores the battles she faces and the lessons she learns growing up in Turkey. While Ozge is initially thrilled with going to school and infatuated with her teacher, the continuing militarization of the classroom ("every Turk is born a soldier") begins to take its toll. "Left-wing propaganda" is banned, and the lack of imports means Ozge and her peers don't have the same choices and freedoms as students in the West. As Ozge struggles to find where she fits in and who she wants to become, she faces pressure to perform academically, pressure to follow in her sister's footsteps, and pressure to make her please her parents. In the end, will Ozge learn to swim against the current--will she dare to disappoint?
Samanci's artistic style is unique and beautiful. Her story isn't contained by panels, sprawling across the page and mixing with photos and collaged elements. Her story is one that teens will connect to and draw inspiration from. Ozge's realization that once she learns how to learn, she is able to learn whatever she wants is an important insight for any student.
