Mr. Rochester by Sarah Shoemaker
3.0
emotional mysterious slow-paced

Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I liked this book, but what stopped me from giving it four stars is the fact that Shoemaker wrote Mr. Rochester's character while wearing rose glasses.  Mr. Rochester is complicated.  Mr. Rochester is problematic.  I felt, however, that the author was trying to convince the reader, a little too hard, that Mr. Rochester really was a nice guy.  Her explanations were too simple.  Mr. Rochester could have had a childhood without guidance or kindness.  Mr. Rochester early adulthood could have been colored by the fact that his father used him to further his own financial gains.  But none of this is still an excuse for lying to and manipulating Jane Eyre.  That is NOT romantic.
