At First Spite by Olivia Dade

5.0

♾️/5 because WOW I want to give this book 5 stars a million times over.

I continue to say it and I am going to say it again, Olivia Dade writes plus size characters, both mmcs and fmcs, in such a romantic way that I am never going to stop reading her work. You can easily see the desire the love interest has for them dripping off the page and it never feels like a “I love you in spite of your size” but instead a “wow your size adds to the allure.”

This book gets a little messy with Matthew being Athena’s ex-fiancé’s brother, but it was not every too messy. You could tell from their first meeting that Matthew and Athena’s connection was once in a life time. Getting to see them move from friends-to-lovers was everything. Their friendship however was such a strong bond that it was melting my heart. The portrayal of what Athena experiences with her depression was so raw, real and vulnerable that I felt seen in a way that I have not felt before. I could connect and see myself in Athena and her mindset that pulled me fully into the story. Matthew’s care for her during her rougher experiences had me a MESS, like that man loved her from day one I swear. Matthew’s journey with grief and roles he has within his family were also super real and I felt that they both were able to support each other in such a deep way that made a huge impact on furthering their relationship.

The third act breakup hurt, a lot. But the groveling… THE GROVELING WAS UNMATCHING I am still thinking about it a day later. I loved how much fun these two had with each other and with their friends in town while also diving deep with their insecurities and worries. The inclusion of monster smut in this book was so funny I loved it a lot. The spice in this book was show stopping I mean the connection they had was just FIRE on page is the only way I can describe it in a safe for goodreads way. The first one where she puts on a ✨show✨ for him... truly I was speechless lol.

I really adored Harlot’s Bay and I cannot wait to see where the series goes because I am obsessed. Knowing that it’s going to be about Karl makes me even more excited. The side characters in this story were top tier friends and comedic relief lol. Athena is a top female main character of all time for me, I will not forget her or Matthew’s story anytime soon, I already want to read it honestly.

I could go on for ages about these two and their love however I will save y’all from reading a longer post then this already is lol. I highly recommend this book a million times over, easily my favorite Olivia Dade work!! READ THE BOOK‼️
