The Mongoliad: Book One
by Greg Bear, Neal Stephenson, Mark Teppo
You know that game we sometimes played when we were younger, where one person starts a story and you go around the circle and each person adds the next bit. Well, imagine that game being played by some medieval re-enactment enthusiasts and you come up with the Mongoliad series.
This fantasy series takes as its backdrop the Mongol invasion of Europe. A motley band of knights representing the best (or worst) Christendom has to offer sent off on an epic quest to assassinate the Khagan - the leader of the Mongol horde. It somewhat apes A Song Of Fire and Ice with its points of view. The characterisation can be wafer thin at times and there is some terminology that is simply not explained. The authors clearly have a hard-on for exotic and impractical weaponry.
Having said that, its an enjoyable enough romp across Medieval Europe with some good, and gory, combat sequences and I will probably follow the series.
