Among the Beasts & Briars by Ashley Poston

3.0

A slow start, a very engaging middle, and an ending that left me with questions is why this book sits at a 3.

This is a beauty and the beast style retelling and while it was quite enjoyable it felt very disjointed at times.
In this story you follow Cerys (daisy) who is the daughter of the royal gardener. Their realm is split into two cities and separated by woods that are cursed if you enter them. However during the coronation of the new queen, the wood invades their town and infects everyone causing Cerys to flee and try to get help from the other town that she's only heard stories of. Along the way she is accompanied by Fox, who is an actual fox and her best friend from the beginning of the books.

No spoilers so I'll leave it at that for the plot of these two basically going on a quest across these infected forests to save the kingdom.
This book was a bit darker/gruesome in the descriptions of the mythological creatures and the curses they are under.

Overall, this book was a decent read but nothing spectacular but if you are looking for a fast standalone fantasy romance its worth a look.
I listened to this on audio, and I think that may have been part of the problem as well, I really love the male narrator, but the female was basically just talking the entire time with little/no emotions, and it felt very flat.

I honestly think I'll pick up other books by this author because I do think her writing style was good, this book just felt a bit rushed. I'd have liked to see a more cohesive ending with the characters and my one major question which I can't voice because it's a major spoiler.
