Marlinchen is the last and least desirable of three daughters. These daughters belong to a great wizard, the last wizard in the gothic, sea side, Slovic town of Olbya, that is slowly being taken over by industrialization as well as a fascination in the arts.

The town has a dark past filled with monsters that have been long since removed from the area until recently. Deaths have now been piling up within the small flourishing town and not only is this a concern but much to the Wizard's chagrin the sisters have found themselves wowed by the modernizations that has begun to sprout around them despite the warning of ruination prophesied by their father from allowing themselve pleasure in such things.

Sadly, it is not the monsters in this tale that one should be afraid of but the darkness that is behind closed doors within a family home or within the care of a presumed caretaker. The horrid treatment of characters as well as their warped sense of self may make readers feel a deep emptional dread and anger.

Ava Reid has written a beautifully prosed story that is deeply dark in a way that is true horror and not something of the imagination when looking at the possibilities of cruelty from family members. Although the story can sometimes feel slow moving due to less action focused scenes, the mere heaviness and sense of dread you feel is deeply disturbing as well as eye opening.
