Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman
3.75
I just had to have this book. Primarily because I thought it was a retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel because it is my first book love. Sweeping adventure featuring a masked hero and swept-off-your-feet romance -what's not to love?! at least, by a 10 year old girl!
This novel isn't quite a retelling of that classic story even while it features The League. We read from the perspective of an English housemaid who found herself involved in one of the League's mystifying rescue attempts. I don't fully love this protagonist but yet, I understood all the problems she was facing and was brave enough to voice (onya!). She is, however, quite a mature one despite her ignorance of the world. I would love to see how much more she develops later on.
Oh and the vampires... I must say that I found it a little strange but there is a twist and I hope there will be a bigger twist in the next book that explains the twist in this book! It was fun read though I feel a little disappointed in that I'm missing the presence of some of the characters from the original classic.
