No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline Without Shame
by Janet Lansbury
I liked this book. Some are complaining about how short it is, but really, if you have a toddler in the house, how much time do you have for reading?! There was lots of great bits of wisdom in here and I particularly enjoyed that it used real problems from real people to illustrate how to tackle them. The only thing I wasn't particularly fond of was that the while the author says she likes "playful parenting" when it happens naturally, she really did seem to be "all business, all the time" which can be read with a bit of a negative tone. Really though, I liked the author's straightforwardness for the most part.
Having two older kids (almost 13 and 16) and feeling like I did not too bad of a job in that regard, but having a toddler once again, I felt like I needed a refresher. I also felt that some of the strategies used with my older kids weren't necessarily the most respectful; time outs and 1-2-3 magic come to mind. Being that much older, I found myself looking for something that fit with my beliefs a bit better and this author has come up quite a few times in my online parenting groups.
Setting boundaries is a skill more adults need and how wonderful to start with our children... This gives them the structure they need to feel safe and loved but it also teaches them how to communicate appropriately.
