A stunning middle grade about learning and accepting the different people we meet and their different backgrounds. What I found interesting was Clayton's decision to have Ella separate from both the non-Black Americans and the Black Africans in her cohort, narrowing in on a specific aspect of diaspora. I also loved the references to fellow authors in her friend group - it was a fun game of Where's Waldo, catching the names I recognized, which only highlighted how much of this book was really about friendship and community. Can't wait to pick up the sequel!
