How does one give this anything but five stars? This woman laid out her most severe and uncomfortable trauma, did not mince one word, held me by the shoulders from within and forced me to confront it all. As a woman who, thankfully, has never experienced something as awful as this, I had to force myself to keep going. It felt like dismissal of her pain to close this book, and I’m glad I did not. As a mother, I pray that my daughter never faces something such as this, but if she ever does, I also pray that she’ll be this strong. This concise. This brave and unrelenting.
This book was also, oddly, very funny sometimes. It feels strange to say that it was an enjoyable read (because of the content, of course) but Alice’s inner monologue was so relatable. The dry sarcasm of a teenage girl is seriously the same across the board, and unmatched by anything, even the audacity of men.
This is a must-read.
