First Down by Grace Reilly

Rating: 3.5

I rather enjoyed First Down. It has some exceptional characters and some interesting plot work too. I’ve previously read Breakaway the second book in the series and absolutely adored that book however this just didn’t do it for me.

Bex and star footballer James decide to fake date to get Bex’s annoying ex off her back and in return Bex tutors James in one of his classes.

Personally I couldn’t care less about American football but even beyond that this book just didn’t quite do it for me. I feel like Bex and James caught major feelings for each other too early and so there was very little tension and some of James’ early attraction actually felt a little creepy like when he was touching himself and thinking about her even though they’d only met once at that point.

Additionally towards the end, it just felt like everything was getting wrapped up in a perfect little bow. Bex’s mother went through so much off the page character growth and it was so jarring to see from her going from being borderline emotionally abusive and toxic to doing the right thing for Bex and seeking help. It was just so bizarre and did not make any sense at all if you ignore the fact the book was already at 96%.

Overall I did enjoy this book but I think the second one is by far the better of the two.
