Ever Cursed by Corey Ann Haydu

2.0

This book has a whimsical feel to it in the beginning but it is definitely meant for older ya audiences. The second half becomes darker and gritty with heavy theme of sexual assault. There is also eat disorders triggers as the oldest princess the main characters cannot eat. The other royals and people of the count love to mock her with it so be warned some descriptions of her are hard to read.

Reagan character really frustrates me because her way of teaching the king a lessons and cause him pain is to punish his wife and daughters who are victims themselves. Everyone is mad the princesses don’t go out and know anything truly about the kingdom but it’s literally not their fault that they’ve been groomed from birth. The more I read honestly the more mad I got. To avenge the wrongs of an evil king she punishes the innocent girls her age and younger.

What makes me the most frustrated is how mad everyone is at Jane and her sisters. Lots of people complained about how annoying Jane is and ignorant but when you read her POV it really does read like a victim of abuse. How are they supposed to know any of this that you want them they never get the chance and no one bothers to tell them! To expect them to just know without any explanation or eye opening happening is ignorant it self and cruel to punish those not given the chance to learn.

The existence of Abbott also is interesting he has a half sister that could very well take his place in the story and have a bigger impact as she would connects to both main characters. Plus the fact it’s a man that who sets it stuff in motion over mind the fact that it’s about female empowerment.
I feel it would have been better to create a theme of a both good and bad creating a grey area of a person because that’s what real people are like. I appreciate the LGBT+ friendly book but the victim blaming that happens is enough to over ride that excitement.
