The Young Elites by Marie Lu

4.0

I really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I might. I mean it has all the right ingredients to be a Joana book - fantasy, magic, assassins, princes, kings, etc. - but I had heard some really mixed reviews from people I really trust. So I didn't go into The Young Elites with high expectations, which is why I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I must say that I was surprised at how twisted and dark this book was. I read the Legend series by Marie Lu, and even though it isn't the happiest series in the world, it is still not filled with twisted (like hardcore twisted) people in it. The Young Elites is. I think that Marie Lu took a risk, and for me it worked. I liked the characters, the writing, the setting, and it kept me wanting for the sequel, which is always a win.
If you do not know what this is about: Meet Adelina, a young girl who was struck by a strong fever that left a lot of victims either dead, or with markings. People with markings are called malfettos and Adelina is one of them: she has lost an eye. Some malfettos though have unnatural powers (for X-Men lovers, they are X-Men; for The Flash lovers, they are meta-humans) and they are called The Young Elites. Adelina flees her paternal house because she is being sold off as a mistress, but as she has to defend herself, she comes into her powers. The story goes from there.
Sounds a little cliche? It is a little bit, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. But the darkness that is woven into this story, as well as the depth of the plot that I sense coming, make it a different tale from many that I have read before. All in all, if this title peaked your interest at some point in time, I would recommend you check it out.
