In Cold Blood
by Truman Capote
Wow. This book was impossible to put down. It's incredible that these were real characters and real events. The complexity of Perry and the empathy Capote shows in painting his portrait. Capote's prose. The events of the crime are horrific. Through the author's reconstruction of the circumstances of the two criminal's lives, the motivations behind the horrible crime, which were so banal, made sense.
This is a book that really made me think about death. I really liked the poem that Andy (whose story was also extremely disturbing) left on death row.
The boasts of heraldry, the pomp of pow'r
And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave,
Await alike the inevitable hour:
The paths of glory lead but to the grave.
