When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt
by Kara Cooney
I enjoy Cooney's voice as an author. As someone who is not well versed in the history or politics of ancient Egypt, I found this book very accessible. I also think Cooney's overall argument about the importance of having women in positions of power, especially during times of strife, is weaved throughout the different stories well and her conclusion clearly outlines her point. I fully understood what she was trying to tell me, which I was honestly a bit nervous about, considering how little background I had with the era and location.
I also really like how upfront Cooney is when information is lacking. She is very clear about what parts of our cultural understanding of ancient Egypt are the result of propaganda or assumption and what parts are in the historical record due to hard evidence.
This is a pretty good starter for anyone wanting to learn a bit more about ancient Egypt. The narrow focus makes it easy to digest and Cooney's writing is both entertaining and accessible.
