The romance in this story was somehow too slow and also not enough of a slow burn for me. I feel like there are glimpses of relationship growth -- or at least mutual respect and fondness -- early on that I kept wishing for the characters to reflect back to or dig deeper into, but they didn't. But I'm very much a mood reader so perhaps I just picked the wrong book. There is a power dynamic between Silhara and Martise that seemed to be ignored and it would have been nice to dig into a little. The magic and gods were interesting, but I struggled to understand exactly what was going on sometimes and wish there was a bit more world building.
