Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami
5.0
who can really distinguish between the sea and what's reflected in it? or tell the difference between the falling rain and loneliness?
I chose to read this book because I immensely enjoyed Murakami's Norwegian Wood. I related to the feelings of loneliness and just...something missing...that the novel evoked. Sputnik Sweetheart started off very similar and I thought it would just be Norwegian Wood but worse (but still really similar, so worth a read even then!) but then
the magical realism came in. And oh my god. I thought I did not enjoy Murakami's magical realism as much when I read Kafka on the Shore (still good!), but it was very well done in Sputnik Sweetheart. The two worlds seemed to communicate a lot about love and the lack of it. The loneliness. Ooh.
but what is a sign and what is a symbol? as with all Murakami books (probably, hopefully) there are far too many symbols to understand with only one read. What is blood and why is it inside me already?!
But alas. I really like this book. Will it like me back?
