Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls by T Kira Madden

5.0

Phenomenal.

Sometimes, I find a book compelling because it is well-constructed with masterful writing. Other time, I find it compelling because it speaks to me and what I need to hear at the time. In the case of Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls, this book is both. T Kira Madden's series of essays weaves together how we are both helped and harmed in relationships.

One of her most effective tactics is being able to balance telling v not. There's moments where you know what the next sentence is going to be or how the story ends, but it never comes. By leaving the reader to fill in the next part, it strengthens the blow. Likewise, it mimics the ways in which we talk about (or don't) traumatic events. In particular, the stories about childhood and witness own this masterful stroke - and given the nature of a series of essays, timing and placement or background information, it's powerful.
