Jane Austen's Bookshelf by Rebecca Romney

informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

"Jane Austen's Bookshelf" is a study of the MANY authors that pre-dated Jane Austen, entertained her, and informed her work (and the work of many other authors). It provides details of each author's life and tracks how they fell in and out of favor as a "classic". Interspersed with this information is the book author's story of tracking down each new author, as well as providing her own insight.

I was enthralled, enraged, humbled, and overjoyed as I learned about so many authors I had never heard of and the hardships/difficulties/circumstances they went through to be published. Any fan of Jane Austen would benefit from reading this book - if just to learn a bit more about how she became the writer she was. And the benefit is learning about even more authors you might enjoy reading!
