The Witching Hour
by Anne Rice
Now I really enjoyed this book. You have to love it to read it. It's massive. It hurts your arms to hold it up too long. When I started I hoped I wouldn't like it because of how long it would take to read. Within the first few pages I knew I was going to struggle to put it down.
It's beautifully written (on the whole) and it takes in so much. It's so long because it has so many ancestors of the family to cover in detail. And you don't mind because it really pulls you in. It's so gothic and spooky. I loved it.
And my word it's dark. It covers things that are really quite horrible and disturbing.
With that in mind... Anne Rice seems to be obsessed with child abuse. I know a lot of the 'darkness' is required for the story. And thinking about it, this is a real plot point but, wow it's disturbing.
The ending is ridiculous. I'm still giving it 5 stars though.
