The Eight by Katherine Neville

4.0

This story is told from two perspectives. The first from Catherine in 1972 and the second from Mireille in the 1790s. Catherine is a computer expert being sent to Algeria for a work project. While there a friend wants her to try and get pieces of an antique chess service for his client. Mireille and her cousin Valentine were young novices at Monglane Abbey. France is in the midst of a revolution and the abbess is sending everyone back to their homes, but with pieces of the Montglane chess service, once owned by Charlemagne. They must keep these pieces safe from those that want to find out the secrets and how to unleash its power. This was a good story. It was easy to know which time period you were in. With Catherine’s story at times it seemed to drag on and I felt the book could have been shorter overall.
